The Friendly City

Port Elizabeth is located in the Eastern Cape Province, 770 kilometers east of Cape Town, and is commonly referred to as PE or Gqeberha. It is one of South Africa's major seaports and stretches for 16 kilometers along Algoa Bay, earning it the nicknames "The Friendly City" and "The Windy City." In 1820, British settlers were housed in a newly established town called Port Elizabeth in an effort to fortify the frontier between the Cape Colony and the Xhosa people. Located in a region with over 1,300,000 residents, it is now a part of the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality.
