In order to truly experience Hacklewood Hill at the height of its stately Victorian glory, one must try their fine dining menu dinner at the five star restaurant.
The dining room’s magnificent chandelier lights to full perfection the cut glass, crystal goblets, starched linen and full silver service on the tables below, while superbly trained waiters serve a splendid array of cordon bleu dishes that emanate from the kitchen. Little wonder that the restaurant has garnered itself a slew of fine dining awards and has become a firm favourite on the Port Elizabeth dining scene – not only for its exquisite dinners, but also full English breakfasts, High Tea's and light lunches.
The Hacklewood wine cellar is a delightful underground treasure trove. Here guests are invited to browse an impressive selection of imported white wines and champagnes, as well as a rare collection of vintage reds.
The restaurant itself is the proud recipient of 9 American Express Fine Dining Awards and recently won Platinum in the Diners Club International WIne List Award for 2015.
Dining at The Sands is an equally inviting prospect, thanks in part to the spectacular view and mainly due to the talents of the resident chefs. Breakfasts consist of a well stocked continental buffet and an interesting array of cooked breakfast options. Light lunches (think fresh salads, sandwiches and wraps) are available on request, but the piece de resistance of any stay at The Sands is a three course candle lit dinner.
While the a la carte menu has an eclectic range of options, guests would do well to sample one of the many seafood dishes on offer – not only to taste some of the freshest seafood in the country, but also to experience the restaurant's’ speciality. To complete the meal, the staff are happy to recommend a bottle (or two) from the well stocked Director’s Cellar.
